New Trend for 2012 Short Hair

The butcher. Me. And the Stop and Shop. I remember it well.

There was this moment. I was standing at the butcher counter with my mom, he reached over to hand me something and called me {gulp} "sonny". How old was I? Seven? Eight? Ten? I really don't remember. But I remember that moment...Stop and Shop...Ridgewood, New Jersey....vividly.

I vowed from that moment on to never allow my mother to cut my hair short again. But somewhere along the way came peer pressure, and Michael Jackson, and my best friend Jacki...and well, I did it again. This time it was high school. What was I thinking? And no, there are no pictures! That time, for as much as I didn't like it. I think I pulled it off. But again, I vowed.

My hair has been short since then, but NEVER very short. As women we have some weird issues with our hair. But when I see a confident woman rocking out the short hair, I have to say I'm jealous. My beautiful friend Christina looks amazing with her short hair, nothing short of a super model! I am jealous. I'll admit it. But still, no scissor to my scalp!

And then there was the day when my nine year old decided she wanted to cut her hair...short. I may have panicked for a moment, and relived my butcher moment. But it is her hair, and her choice. It's just hair after all....right.

And truly the trend for spring is short. The pixie cut has revived. And it is edgier and trendier than ever. It rocked runways all over during fashion week. And it is here to stay!

Just look at the celebrities with the pixie...Anne Heche - Halle Berry - Ashlee Simpson - Charlize Theron - Keira Knightley - Ellen DeGeneres - Marisa Tomei - Julie Andrews (one of my favs :) and my daughters inspiration....Emma Watson.

When I see it on someone, I adore it. I think it is incredibly fashionable. And the maintenance? As a mother of three girls...I'm pretty thankful for Tahlia's short "do"!

So what do you think? Are you daring enough to cut it off? I wish I had the guts. I wish I hadn't been scarred by the butcher. But at least I get the pleasure of looking at my small person. I think she rocks it pretty hard!

  1. I've done short (bleach blond pixie twice plus various other not quite as cute short cuts) and looonnnggg (spiral perm curls halfway down my back & super straight too). I'm growing it long again right now. I think I just get bored. Or when it's ling I don't invest in good Conditioner and it gets dried out and I have to cut it off. :) So really, I like both - short and long!

  3. Your daughter rocks that short haircut. I think she looks better than anyone with that pixie cut. She is cute and fun. I think she has a better look than Emma! So you go girl! I would love to be able to have it like that and still look so feminine.

  5. She absolutely rocks the pixie! I had a pixie for about 10 years in my 20s and loved it. It's so easy to maintain (except for the frequent haircuts) and so cool in the sweltering summers. And I'm with you, it's just hair :)

  6. I love it! She's a little beauty. I chopped all of my hair in 12th grade after I no longer felt I needed it long for parts in the school plays. And I have never gone back. I am so low maintenance and with three little ones it makes life so much easier. Plus, I just don't look good with long hair. I wish I did. I guess the grass is always greener. (One time my head was even inadvertently buzzed by a hair dresser, long story. I survived it.)

  7. She looks gorgeous (of course). A few years ago I had my hair quite short, and it was fun & sassy. But my hair is so thick and grows so fast- it was awful trying to maintain it. :)

As for hair, I've never understood people- ok, women- who sob when cutting their hair. For the most part it grows back; it's just an accessory.

  14. Lisa she looks beautiful with her new hair cut. I love it and as you, I wish I could rock a short hair cut, but for now I will stay with my long hair. I had a hair dresser about 3 years ago who chopped my hair way too short and have vowed since to not "cut" my hair only "trim".

  16. Lisa, I am a hairstylist by day and I can't tell you how I admire your daughter. All day long I try to convince people to wear their hair the way "they" would like to wear it. It starts from a very young age that girls/women listen to what others think or tell them what to do. Instead they should be doing what it is they truly want. I love when a child that young has the guts to follow herself. It shows her great character. I can tell by the beauty in her face, that with cutting her hair, not hiding behind it, she is allowing us to see the beauty that is within. Not many adults can do that let alone a child. She Rocks!
Actually Lisa, There are so many really cute cuts that are not as short as your daughter's that I think you would look so gorgeous in. It's great for your image....

  18. She is rocking that pixie, no doubt! I got my hair chopped all the way off for the first time when I was sixteen (the hairdresser kept trying to talk me out of it because my hair was so long; I practically had to SHOVE the scissors in her hand) and ever since, I've loved it best when it's short. Long hair weighs me down; short hair helps me feel more vibrant and alive. It's whatever works best for each person and each personality!
