Fashion Tips for Summer 2012

School is done. The smell of chlorine is in the air. Days are longer and warmer. Outside is just beckoning always.

The joy of summer. I love every second of it.

The challenge can be to not leave the house in the same tired shorts and flip flops each day. Even the farmers market is an excuse to get your style on.

A few basics to remember and keep fashion easy for you on an every day basis.

First the shoes, remember yesterday's post? Payless Shoe Source has some great options for your tootsies. Venture out. Add some color. Have fun with it.

Wide brimmed hat. Add a little jaunt to your outfit...protection to your skin...and a lot of attitude. Hello Jackie-O! It's a summer go-to accessory and easily makes you look like you have it all together! I found this one at Target...so stinkin cute!

Black and white is ever in fashion. And always looks polished. Find yourself a great pair of white shorts or a skirt (I gave you some options here) Choose a basic tank or tee shirt in black - and then accessorize with a scarf or a stack of bracelets. ~ see next suggestion :)

Bangle bracelets. They stack. They jingle. They add instant fashion to every outfit. And...I never leave home without an arm full. True story. I have several options in my shop. I tend to mix copper and silver, and occasionally throw in some gold. Mixed metal is hot. If you love color, and really...who doesn't? ....add in a colorful bangle or something in wood for a little pop.

Don't forget a printed dress. Florals in brights AND pastels are the rage - love this one from the Gap - under $60! Add one to your weekly rotation with your new cute sandals and hat. Dahling, you already look like a rock star! Ye-ow!

So I mentioned pastel right? It's big. Huge. And so are colorful t-shirts. Therefore...in my genius moment, I have an idea. Pastel t-shirts! You're welcome! Fab scoop neck tees in a plethora of colors from Old Navy! Woot!

And to make it EXTRA easy, I've compiled a Polyvore style board!

  1. My biggest summer style challenge is dealing with my hair. It's wavy in the spring, but as soon as summer humidity hits, it gets soft and curly and impossible to do anything with. Suddenly my stylish pixie cut starts looking like Little Orphan Annie's mop-top!

And hats are no help for me - I have a wonky-shaped skull, and the only two hats that ever fit me are cloches and berets. And even berets are sometimes questionable.

For the rest of your post - black and white outfit and mixed metal jewelry is probably one of my favorite combinations EVER. Always, always looks classy and stylish!

  2. Those hats from Target flop right into my eyes. I tried on several with no luck. :/

My biggest fashion challenge is the sun. As in, too much of it! I live in Texas and I'm warm-natured. In the summer, any sleeve feels like I'm wearing too much. Which leaves for a LOT of exposed skin. I'm also a pale-skinned redhead who can burn in 15 minutes or less. I can also burn in an hour after liberally applying sunscreen.

Daily moisturizing lotions that contain sunscreen either make me a greasy mess or do not provide enough sun protection. The one pure sunscreen that I like (and actually keeps me from burning!) makes my skin even greasier than regular lotions and I just feel dirty all day. I use it if I know I'll be outside for longer than 20 minutes, but I don't like to use it all day, every day.

Do you have any suggestions for covering up while staying cool? Or a good non-greasy/dirty feeling sunscreen or lotion with SPF that I can use every day? Thanks!

  3. Hahaha! You totally crack me up. I love reading your posts :)

Okay my summer fashion challenge is....drum roll please...I live in Southeast Alaska, we don't have summer. Last night at my son's baseball game I was sporting my winter Under Armour, a winter coat, wool stocking cap and my XtraTufs and I was still cold :) The little bit of summer that we do get doesn't usually break 70 degrees. No worries though! I love living here.
