A fantastic modesty trick I learned from my teens! - Fashion Tip Tuesday

Let's face it. I'm just not ready to embrace shape wear. I know its value. I know its necessity. But there is part of me that just won't do it. Now, I'm not going to lie. There have been days where I have struggled to pull on the Spanx...and then seen the amazing transformation. But still I cringe. It's like putting me in a push up bra. Try as I might, there are just some things you can't fake!
Side track...if you want to know and grasp the beauty of shape wear - you have to read this post by my friend Jo-Lynne at Musings of a Housewife. She's just the bomb.
That being said, my girls, my teenage girls have taught me an amazing trick in modesty.
Spandex.

It seems many girls, women, ladies show us WAAAAY too much of their undergarments. Agreed? Pants that low rise, or gap. Skirts that you can't bend over in. And have sweet mercy if the wind blows! Honey, I just don't care to see your thong...and neither does anyone else. Really.

We always practice the bend over rule with dresses and shorts and pants. If I can see your "stuff" in the dressing room...someone...somewhere is gonna see it too. "Not-gonna-happen." We drill modesty. And let me tell you, it is not easy TO be modest.

But the beauty of spandex is it's there for "just in case" moments. You know, "just in case" the wind is strong. "Just in case" you fall down the stairs. "Just in case" you have to sit on bleachers. Get it?

It's brilliant really. My girls - aren't they a vision of beautiful, sweet, young ladies?
And then...BAM! Fashionable protected!
They even wear spandex under sport shorts and sweat pants. Anything that MIGHT gap, or they MIGHT have an issue with.

I too have embraced this brilliance. It's just too good to pass up. I feel more free in my summer dresses than ever before! And hey, you just might want mix it up with shape wear instead of spandex.

So what do I mean my spandex? The girls have played volleyball. So they wear "official" volleyball wear spandex shorts. (And seriously, if I had to wear those as my SHORTS when I was playing volleyball...I may have chosen another sport!) You can purchase them at any sporting good store.

I have found two sources that offer just what I want. Not quite as tight as shape wear.
These shorts from Jockey are super comfy and actually on sale today for $9.99...that's huge!

My favs come from my fashion secret website Heavenly Couture. They have a pair in their basics section that I love for $7!! AND, this is a great site to visit for amazing deals!

So there you go. An easy way to maintain your modesty and feel confident the next time the wind blows...or you happen to find yourself on a trampoline...in a dress. It COULD happen.

  1. Just last week my family went to a baseball game. As we were leaving, I stumbled. Really, the curb just jumped out at me. As I was holding the hand of my youngest, I couldn't regain my balance, nor did I want to pull her down. Somehow, I managed to turn my body, disentangle myself from her... and fall, gracelessly, to the cement roadway. I was wearing a dress. With spandex shorts. And, oh, was I glad of that fact! No one needed to see what could have been under there. :)

  4. I love that you discovered that! That has been one of my tricks since high school and it's fabulous. You feel so much more at ease and less self-conscious knowing that you're wind/clumsy moment/accident proof under a skirt or dress! For a few years it was hard to find spandex shorts that were appropriate for under skirts and dresses, but now they're back and that makes me very happy!

  6. I always wear spandex under my skirts and dresses, and I love it! There are so many benefits. Modesty is important to me and yep, it definitely makes me feel comfortable that I'm covered up in case my skirt flips. I also like that the spandex shorts act a little like Spanx - I think they help my skirts hang more smoothly over my hips - but they're much more comfortable than official shape wear. Also, for curvier girls like me, wearing skirts can cause some chafing if my legs rub together while I'm walking. (Not trying to be TMI, just keeping it real.) Wearing spandex shorts keeps me from chafing while I'm wearing a skirt. So I'm definitely a fan!!

  7. Awesome! I just discovered those Jockey shorts on line and was wondering if they'd work for that very purpose! A far cry from the cost of Spanx. Black is very practical and always correct, but if you want to honor an inner wild woman, look for cheerleading trunks. They make them in every color and shape imaginable. They've got lamé, and leopard, and zebra, and sequins!

  9. This is neat and I've seen my female friends doing this for like 20 years! :). Oh, your daughters are beautiful!! ...as far as the 'official' shorts for some sports, sometimes I wonder about that...I know there are different varieties/thicknesses/padding etc, but I've seen girls wearing some on some teams (and on the street) that would make wearing tight satin panties out on the court look modest; nothing left to the imagination. (No doubt driving higher male attendance to college volleyball games, but I digress...) ...as for me,padded spandex bike shorts! Makes long rides waaay more comfortable!
