She steps on the stage for the VERY first time. Ballet slippers on. Pink tutu "just so". Hair is curled. And make-up! Your baby is wearing make-up!
Her eyes desperately search for you in the sea of people...an expression of frantic begins to cross her face. But then. But then she sees you. You sense her relief. She smiles and waves. Your heart begins to melt.
The music begins and ten little girls, loosely following a routine start to dance. Well, almost all ten. One can't seem to take her eyes off the crowd and she just stands there. One seems to forget the routine altogether and creates her own dance. But not YOUR daughter. She is perfect...to you.
The show ends you make your way to the stage to claim your prize...your little ballerina. She runs to you and hurls herself into your arms! Breathlessly she asks, "mommy, how did I do?"
You hug her tightly to yourself, holding back the tears of pride. "Sweetie, you were a shining star!" Then you give her this token. She grasps it tightly in her tiny little hand, because it fits just perfectly, and smiles up at you.
Years later when high heels replace ballet slippers. When softball gloves replace tutus. Or when her own little girl begs to take dance lessons. She will remember.
She will remember how you made her feel like a "shining star"!
