Favorite Thing - DOTS and a DIY Tutorial on How to make your OWN Polka Dot Shoes

Glitter. In my garage. In my car. In my closet. At church. The doctors office. The dressing room at the GAP. Yup, I've pretty much left a trail.

Mind you....it wasn't because I didn't do a sufficient job adhering the glitter. Truth? I kinda liked leaving a trail...so I MAY have done the "tap your heels together three times" thing! Ok, I DID do it. But it was fun. And I felt like a fairy with pixie dust. Don't judge!

Enough about the glitter. Let's move on to DOTS! Polka dots. And our next DIY tutorial on how to create your own pair of polka dot sneakers!

Isabel, my middle daughter, saw this idea and immediately "needed" a pair. She knew she wanted to start with navy blue shoes, so the hunt was on. This pair, with their adorable gingham checked heel we found at K Mart of all places...and they were a steal at around $11!

The only supplies required? A fabric pen in white. We found ours at Meijer.

Test your pen first on a piece of fabric. Since they are all different, and take a slightly different "touch", you want to be sure you are consistent with your "dotting", and that too much paint doesn't seep out!

Once she got started she was off and running. Placing her dots carefully. I love how she chose to create a couple a tiny bit larger....it created visual interest and variety!

Artistically, she also chose to leave the side panels solid blue and not over-do the dots. I love the contrast it created!

When Isabel was satisfied with the amount of dots and placement, she did go back over them...CAREFULLY...to darken the white. That seems like a weird thing to say, darken the white, but you know what I mean, right? Work with me people!

She then removed the laces, since she thought they would be cooler that way. Personally, I think it would have been easier to remove the laces BEFORE dotting the shoes. But really, who am I to offer that suggestion to an almost 13 year old? Exactly!

Apparently, creating polka dot sneakers is a great deal of work...and significant relaxing is needed when the project is done. And since clean up was a snap...aka NO clean up. I allowed her to rest in my hammock for a hot second!

So are you game for a pair? Let me know what you you come up with!

And don't forget....

BE creative!

  1. These are SO cute! I'm going to check out K mart this Saturday! Can you get the paint pen there too or do you only find them in craft stores?
