Embrace your curls - Love Your Hair - my new Favorite Thing

Be honest. Who loves their hair? Too curly. Too straight. Too short. Too long.

We are rarely satisfied.

Or maybe it's just me? The curls seemed to spring forth from my head soon after birth. Cute as a baby. Unruly as a toddler. And oh, the tangles. My mother raised her white flag and finally gave up. She cut it off.

I share this with you...because I trust you!
Strangely, it came back straight-ish. But then, it remembered it's former rebellious self and decided to return...with a vengeance. And, I hated it.

The high school and college years were a battle - for many reasons. But I just wanted to be "like everyone else". I tried straightening. I spent money on product. I wore hats....seriously. Anything.

Have a painted the picture correctly?

So now you will realize that when I endorse a product that makes my curls the way I dreamt they could be...after ALL these years....THIS...my friends, is a very big deal!

When my Birchbox arrived last week, my skeptical mind said "oh great, another curly hair product...meh." But hey, what did I have to lose?
I washed and conditioned my hair, then added a dollop of Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls - nothing else - and I scrunched. Okay, I am so not exaggerating when I say it already looked better. It was actually scrunching. My hair can be so stubborn.

yes I look unhappy. would you be happy taking a picture of yourself with wet hair? didn't think so.

I decided to take it up a notch, and grabbed my diffuser. Do I know how to party or what?

upside down hair.
End result. My hair curled. Not just the top, or the bottom. Not just certain parts. It curled. All of it. Soft, not frizzy curls.

SHUT UP!

I was stoked to say the least.

And let me tell you NO ONE, could believe my hair was that curly. All my friends kept asking me what I did. Seriously.

And this is what it looks like after waking up and doing NOTHING...three days later. (Now don't be all grossed out, us curly haired girls cannot wash our hair too much - it doesn't like it. Trust me, no oil in hair. Are we clear? :)

Miss. Jessie seems to have several other curly hair products available. I can't vouch for anything but the Pillow Soft Curls, but I sure am going to give them all a try.

Hi, my name is Lisa, and it has taken me the best part of 40 years to embrace my curls.

Thank you Birchbox, and thank you Miss. Jessie. I am forever grateful!

Do you have a hair "woe"?
A favorite hair product?
If so, I'd love to know your secret weapons!

  1. I use Curl Care. It smells wonderful and work terrific. I have spiral, corkscrew curls; much harder to maintain. Curl Care works wonders. I don't wash it as often as I did before either, I realized that the hard way; don't wash every day!

  3. I didn't know not to brush my hair until I got into high school. HIGH SCHOOL before I wasn't walking around with frizzed out whackadoo hair. Ugh. It pains me to even think of it.
I do love it when curls "come back in" as if I have a choice...
I'm walking a fine line with my daughter who has *some* curl, but not all the time. Makes for some interesting doos.

  4. I probably shouldn't comment, but I do have a good story about curls. My hair is stick-straight. Long, straight, and red (not orange; auburn). I love it!

There was a time when I was in elementary school when it was cool to have curly hair. And I wanted curly hair more than anything! So my mom bought a home permanent kit and curled my hair one day after school. The next morning, I woke up and my hair was STRAIGHT. My mom yelled at me for washing my hair. You weren't supposed to wash it for a few days to let it set. She never did believe that I did NOT wash it!

The wonderful mom she was, she let me try again. This time, we used the entire bottle of chemicals and let it sit for twice (or was it 3 times?) as long. I didn't wash my hair for a week afterward, just to be sure that it would set. It lasted this time, but not as long as the box said it would.

It did last long enough to be immortalized in a school photo, however. :)

After my curls left, I never tried again. Well, I tried with hot rollers and curling irons, but only got an hour's worth of curl, max. I love my straight hair, but sometimes I see a curly-haired gal and daydream about having her hair. For a few seconds, at least. :)

  5. I have psychopathic hair. It's out to kill me, I swear! Very thick, mostly wavy, often curly and it'll frizz like nothing you've seen before. Have you ever seen the episodes of FRIENDS where they're in Barbados? It's the kind of hair that's already curled again on the left side when I start using a straightening iron on the right. What's worst is, despite not having bangs, I get a halo of curls across my forehead. It's my hair's way of mocking me. Evil.

I have yet to find a product that works on my hair. I've tried Aussie, Bed Head, Garnier Fructis, Paul Mitchell, Ouidad, and Frizz Ease products (among others). Nothing keeps my beast of a mane tamed for more than a couple hours. I'm going to try this out if I can find it. Anyone else have suggestions? I'd love to try anything!!

  7. I just found Catwalk, Curl Collection; Curlesque. It works pretty well and a little goes a long way.I'll have to try the Pillow soft, too! But I have shorter hair and I have to at least wet it in the morning and then use the diffuser to dry it faster or it's crazy! (old picture, btw)

  8. I have wavy curly hair and I can't stand it so I try to straighten it all the time. Let me add that it is also THICK and LONG so it takes twice the amount of time to dry (with a hair dryer) and like 4 times to hair dry. I use John Freda's 3 day straight right after I get out of the shower, brush my hair and then blow dry using a concentrator to straighten it as it dries (it just makes the curls less frizzy and unruly). The 3 day straight doesn't really keep your hair straight for 3 days but it DOES make it easier to straighten and keeps is straight for at least 2 days.

  9. So, I some how left a post out there in the world-wide web and it got swallowed in some hole... love your hair, love the post. I had to laugh... I slept on brush curlers all night long- no sleep- when I was in hs... curly hair was cool. I'm sharing this w/ my twins that inherited their dad's curly hair!

  10. Unlike you, I've loved my curly hair most of my adult life. I think its unpredictability is most appealing! I'll stand by the shampoo line, Curl Keeper product and the leave-in detangler Slip by Frizzoff. The products are water soluble, rinse clean each day and are natural. The stuff is made in Canada and the inventor, Jonathan Torch, also owns/operates the Curly Hair Institute (Toronto) where I get my hair cut twice a year. He's taught me a ton about how to manage my curls.

  11. I grew up in the 80s when curly hair was in...and got perms in my stick straight hair....and never stopped getting them. Now I have a daughter who has curly hair...and here is what I have learned in 4 years. Go online and buy a brush at knot genie.com. It will save a billion gallons of tears. This is not optional. If you see it and get sticker shock...sign up for their emails and Facebook page and wait for a sale. This past year I found Ouidad.com. Made a difference for the better but jury still out. Think the chlorine / swimming got to it this summer...again. But most important...invest in some argon oil...or Moroccan oil...absorbs in and does not leave hair greasy. And now I'm off to try what you recommended! Oh...and the person that said she did not learn to comb her hair until high school...I was wondering about that with my daughter...she is almost 5 and I still do it for her...wondered how I'll ever get her to school on time next year. 14. I have very curly hair, thick as can be and down to my butt and I am always looking for new products for curly hair. Almost every product adds volume to my hair and I really don't need that. I will have to try some of these products mentioned. Thanks so much for sharing.

  15. I have crazy hair... my hair has no volume at the scalp but too much at the bottom.... my sister calls me hagrid(off of Harry potter) and my hair when curly is just past my breasts but when I straighten it (rarely) it comes all the way to my waist.... its terrible and of course I have to be a ninth grader so I cant buy any product that is expensive... so I was just wondering how much this stuff cost and if you can buy it in salons?
